2019 Cal State Omaha Poll – Week 2

Week two of the 2019 College Baseball season is already in the books. Seems like the season couldn’t get started fast enough and already seems like it is whipping by a fever pitch.

There was some minor shuffling within the Cal State Omaha college baseball poll but no major shake ups.

East Carolina took a tumble from fourth to ninth after losing three games last week. Florida also dropped after dropping mid-week games and their Friday game to Miami (Fla).

Baylor makes their debut in the Cal State Omaha college baseball poll at No. 24 while Southern Miss dropped out after barely cracking the Top 25 last week.

Records are through games completed February 25th.

1. Vanderbilt: 5-1 (last week 1)
Vandy took care of business mid-week vs. Evansville and managed a double-header sweep of Pepperdine to go 3-0 for the week
2. UCLA: 6-1 (last week 2)
Taking the Georgia Tech series in Atlanta helps keep the Bruins here. The only loss came on Friday vs. GT in extra innings.
3. Texas Tech: 5-1 (last week 3)
The Red Raiders swept Kentucky with no problem.
4. Michigan: 6-0 (last week 5)
No mid-week tune-up for the Wolverines proved to be no problem sweeping The Citadel over the weekend to remain perfect on the season.
5. Florida State: 7-0 (last week 7)
Youngstown State had the honor of getting swept by the Seminoles who look to determined to send Mike Martin out with a Championship.
6. LSU: 7-0 (last week 6)
Although the Tigers remain undefeated, we’re questioning the level of competition they are playing early. Mid-week win vs. SE Louisiana and then a weekend sweep of Bryant isn’t getting us excited.
7. Cal State Fullerton: 4-2 (last week 9)
Titans move up two spots by virtue of ECU and Florida who were ranked ahead of them dropping. Two wins in San Diego during the Tony Gwynn Legacy against Missouri State and Oklahoma with a good test for Stanford coming to town this weekend.
8. TCU: 5-2 (last week 10)
Three wins this week with the only stumble vs Grand Canyon on Friday night. Concerning that Friday night starter Nick Lodolo is now 0-2.
9. East Carolina: 5-3 (last week 4)
Dropping a mid-week to Campbell and then losing to Monmouth and Air Force will not keep you in top five in our poll.
10. Oregon State: 8-0 (last week 11)
The Beavers are showing no hang over from winning the CWS in 2018. Still perfect on the season and all their games have been played in Arizona to start the season.
11. North Carolina: 7-0 (last week 12)
Four close games but the Tar Heels stayed undefeated after beating North Carolina A&T mid-week and sweeping South Florida in Chapel Hill.
12. Florida: 5-3 (last week 8 )
Dropping both mid-week games vs. USF and North Florida and splitting their weekend series with Miami has the gators drop three spots and out of the Top 10. The Gators’ opening weekend opponent, Long Beach State is winless on the season, rendering their week 1 sweep of the Dirtbags a little less impressive.
13. Georgia: 6-0 (last week 14)
UGA tore through UMass Lowell posting up double digit runs on Saturday and Sunday.
14. Oklahoma State: 5-2 (last week 13)
The Cowboys went 3-1 for the week and drop a tick after losing to Wright State on Sunday.
15. Stanford: 6-1 (last week 15)
The Cardinal hold steady at 15 after splitting the weekend series in Palo Alto with UNLV.
16. Ole Miss: 4-2 (last week 16)
The Rebels ran over Arkansas State and took two of three against Tulane in New Orleans. The one loss was a 13-12 heart breaker on Saturday night.
17. Clemson: 6-1 (last week 17)
Tigers swept VMI over the weekend including avoiding the double header trap game on Saturday.
18. Georgia Tech: 3-3 (last week 18)
There is no shame losing to the No. 2 in our poll in the UCLA Bruins. Losing to two at home is a little concerning but not enough to move the Yellow Jackets from the No. 18 slot.
19. Arkansas: 5-1 (last week 19)
Hogs took their first loss of the season to an unranked USC squad out in Los Angeles.
20. Duke: 6-1 (last week 20)
Duke took their one loss of the season to Northwestern and still have not left Durham on the season.
21. Tennessee: 7-0 (last week 21)
The Volunteers are off to a blistering start and after seven games, have given up a total of four runs. Vols could be fast movers if they keep pitching the way they have opened the season.
22. Coastal Carolina: 7-1 (last week 22)
Coastal took its first loss to NC State in extra innings. Keep an eye on the Chants as they could impress later in the season.
23. Louisville: 1-2 (last week 23)
Still not terribly impressed with the Cardinals this season. They did go 4-0 on the week beating Eastern Kentucky and Brown. Until they start playing more formidable competition, Louisville will remain at the back half of the poll.
24. Baylor: 7-0 (last week unranked)
The level of competition for the Baylor Bears has not been top notch (Holy Cross & Cornell) but the offense is there. The big test will come in Houston this weekend when they take on Texas A&M, Rice, Texas State and UT Arlington.
25. Arizona: 6-2 (last week 24)
Kudos to the Wildcats for going on the road to Houston but dropping two of three vs. Cougars, we’ll move then down a spot but not out completely.

Dropped out:
25. Southern Miss: 6-2 (last week 25)
After breaking into the poll last week, Southern Miss dropped two games in Starkville, Miss. The jury is still out if they can break back in next week.

Others on the verge of breaking in. (Alphabetical order)
Arizona State (3-0), Illinois (3-0), Miami, Fla. (3-0), Mississippi State (4-0), NC State (4-0), Texas A&M (3-0), UC Irvine (2-1), UConn (2-1)
