Lots of movement in the Cal State Omaha poll rankings this week. The majority of the movement came from teams ranked last week in the mid-teens and breaking into the top 10.
The biggest mover has to be the undefeated Tennessee Volunteers, jumping 10 spots from 21 to 11. Of the 11 games played, the Vols have shutout their opponents 6 times.
Those dropping the most included Cal State Fullerton from seven to 15, LSU from sixth to 14 after getting swept by Texas and TCU losing eight spots after a poor showing this weekend in Houston.
Arizona State and NC State enter the poll for the first time coming in with their undefeated records. Arizona and Baylor dropped out
Records are through games completed March 3rd.
1. Vanderbilt: 9-2 (last week 1)
Losing to Austin Peay mid-week not that big of a deal and sweeping Dayton over the weekend keeps Vandy at No. 1
2. UCLA: 9-2 (last week 2)
Bruins lost the second game of a double header with Sac State. Not enough to move the Bruins down.
3. Florida State: 10-0 (last week 5)
Seminoles sweep Mercer to remain one of four undefeated teams on the season.
4. Michigan: 8-1 (last week 4)
The Wolverines took their first loss on the second game of a double header at Cal State Northridge.
5. Oregon State: 8-0 (last week 10)
Beavers make a 5 spot jump despite taking their first loss of the season on Sunday to West Virginia.
6. North Carolina: 11-1 (last week 11)
Sure the Tar Heels swept UMass Lowell at home but their offense is clicking and UNC looks scary good this year.
7. Texas Tech: 6-3 (last week 3)
Going winless in the Frisco College Baseball Classic is not a way to stay within the top 3 in our poll.
8. Stanford: 9-2 (last week 15)
Stanford looks good as well with their only loss coming on Sunday in a walk-off while visiting Cal State Fullerton
9. Ole Miss: 8-2 (last week 16)
The Ole Miss non-conference schedule is not impressive nor stacked but they keep winning and putting up big offense.
10. Georgia: 9-2 (last week 13)
Clean weekend sweep of Georgia Southern moves the Bulldogs up three spots.
11. Tennessee: 12-0 (last week 21)
The Vols are unbeaten to start the season and their team ERA is a microscopic 0.85.
12. Arkansas: 9-1 (last week 19)
Hogs went 4-0 on the week with wins vs. Memphis and a sweep of Stony Brook at home.
13. East Carolina: 8-4 (last week 9)
Pirates ended the Leclair Classic 2-1 and a mid-week win against Elon. Will need a stronger showing against Ole Mis and Mississippi State mid-week to maintain their rankings.
14. LSU: 8-3 (last week 6)
We beat up the Tigers for scheduling patsies to start the season and lo and behold, they travel to Austin and get their tails whipped by the Texas Longhorns. Until LSU gets their act together, they will continue to fall from our rankings.
15. Cal State Fullerton: 5-4 (last week 7)
Dropping the double header to Stanford to start the home opener weekend was not what the Titans were looking for. Loses exposed weaknesses that the Titans will need to button up before moving up in the rankings again.
16. TCU: 6-4 (last week 8)
The Frogs offense was apparently left in Fort Worth because their showing in Houston for the Shriner’s Baseball Classic was anemic. Their only win this weekend came vs. Houston who went winless in the tournament.
17. Florida: 9-4 (last week 12)
Any college baseball team in the state of Florida is beating the Gators right now. Loses to Jacksonville and Central Florida mid-week hurt the Gators and sweeping Winthrop in your own yard really is not helping their cause of being a top ranked team.
18. Clemson: 8-3 (last week 17)
South Carolina took two of three from the Tigers but Clemson holds steady at 17 by virtue it was a big in-state rivalry series played at home-away-neutral sites.
19. Georgia Tech: 7-4 (last week 18)
The Yellow Jackets hold strong despite losing the second half of their double header to a visiting Northwestern
20. Oklahoma State: 6-4 (last week 14)
You lose two out of three in your own yard to Iowa, you’re getting dropped.
21. Duke: 9-2 (last week 20)
Sweeping Penn State will not make you lose or gain a lot of ground in this poll.
22. Coastal Carolina: 10-2 (last week 22)
Coastal Carolina looked good beating Illinois, UConn and Indiana this weekend.
23. Louisville: 8-3 (last week 23)
The Cardinals are rebounding after a slow start but a sweep over James Madison is not going to help you get out of the bottom of the rankings.
24. Arizona State: 11-0 (last week unranked)
The offense coming out of Tempe is being generated by their big three but enough to keep the Sun Devils undefeated.
25. NC State: 11-0 (last week unranked)
Undefeated at 11-0, the Wolfpack get an invite into the Top 25. The big test comes in two weeks when they meet FSU in Raleigh.
Dropped out:
Baylor: 9-2 (last week 24)
The Bears were exposed by both Texas A&M and Rice this past weekend down in Houston.
Arizona: 8-4 (last week 25)
The wins vs. Houston do not look that impressive anymore along with losses New Mexico and Wisconsin-Milwaukee moves the Wildcats out of the rankings.
Others on the verge of breaking in. (Alphabetical order)
Illinois (7-3), Miami, Fla. (9-2), Mississippi State (10-1), Texas (10-3), Texas A&M (11-2), UC Irvine (7-3), UConn (5-5)
