Titans Survive Fullerton Regional After Losing Opening Game

The top seeded Cal State Fullerton Titan Baseball team stumbled out of the gate in the opening game of the Fullerton Regional, losing to the fourth seeded Minnesota Golden Gophers. In a double elimination tournament, another lose meant the Titans would see their season come crashing to an end.

With their backs against the wall, the Titans came out swinging, literally. Their bats woke up and the Titans went on a tear beating Stanford on Saturday in the losers bracket game which set up a battle against New Mexico who lost in the nightcap to Minnesota. Faced with the prospects of having to win a double header on Sunday, the Titans responded by taking down New Mexico in the first game and then took on Minnesota. The Gophers had the advantage of playing the game on full rest while the Titans had already played a full nine innings. The Titans eventually prevailed again, handing Minnesota their first loss of the Regional. This set up the all-important elimination game for Monday. Winner advances to play in the Super Regional against UCLA who won their Sunday night game. Loser ends the season with a sour taste in their mouth.

The Titans once again proved why they have earned the name Cal State Omaha by taking down Minnesota 9-5 and handing the Gophers their second loss in two games. The win advanced Cal State Fullerton for the right to play UCLA in a best of three series up in Jackie Robinson Stadium. Here is a video of the final out of the Fullerton Regional where Nick Ramirez strikes out the final Minnesota batter and the celebration ensues.
